Microsoft Edge is a powerful browser, but occasionally it may become unresponsive — hanging, freezing, or even crashing completely. If you’re facing issues like Edge not working properly, here are several fixes you can try from easiest to more advanced.

🛠 Fixes to Try (Step-by-Step)
1. Disable Hardware Acceleration
One of the most common causes of freezing is hardware acceleration misbehaving.
- In Edge, go to Settings → System and performance (or
edge://settings/system). - Turn off the toggle for “Use hardware acceleration when available.”
- Restart Edge.
Many users report this resolves freezes, especially when browsing content with heavy graphics.
2. Clear Browsing Data (Cache, Cookies, etc.)
Corrupted cache or site data can lead to strange behavior.
- In Edge, go to Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Clear browsing data.
- Choose “All time” as time range.
- Select Cookies and other site data, Cached images and files, and optionally Other site data.
- Click Clear now, close Edge, then reopen and test.
3. Disable or Remove Suspicious Extensions
Extensions (especially ones not well-maintained) can cause compatibility issues or crashes.
- Open Menu → Extensions → Manage extensions.
- Disable all extensions temporarily.
- Restart Edge and see if it works properly.
- If it does, re-enable them one by one to identify the culprit.
4. Reset Edge to Default
If many internal settings have been changed, a reset can help.
- Go to Settings → Reset settings (or
edge://settings/reset). - Click “Restore settings to their default values”.
- Confirm, then restart Edge.
This doesn’t delete your favorites or passwords, but resets internal settings like startup page, new tab page, pinned tabs, etc.
5. Repair / Reinstall Edge via System
If none of the above work, you can repair or reinstall Edge:
- On Windows → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge → click the three dots → Modify / Change (if available) → choose Repair.
- If repair is not available or doesn’t work: uninstall Edge (if possible) and then download and reinstall the latest version from Microsoft’s site.
Alternatively, use the Microsoft Edge offline installer to overwrite the corrupted installation.
6. Update Edge and Windows
Sometimes compatibility bugs are fixed in updates.
- Go to Edge → Settings → About Microsoft Edge — it will check for updates.
- Also, open Windows Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update and make sure Windows is fully up to date.
